Notes for Contributors to Folia Heyrovskyana
Folia Heyrovskyana publishes original, yet unpublished, entomological works,
particularly those focused on systematics. The authors of articles are supposed
to completely adhere to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN
— fourth edition, 1999) including its important recommendations.
The manuscripts are reviewed by two reviewers and the Editorial Board
makes decisions concerning their publication.
Manuscripts not adhering to the requirements summarized below may be
returned without reviewing.
The works may be accepted for print either in English or in German. The
translations will be provided by the authors. The Editorial Board can only
provide a final language revision; works calling for extensive changes in the
language will be returned to the authors for rewriting.
Each work should consist of the following parts:
H e a d i n g. It includes the following items (in the order
as specified below, each item on a separate line): i) a short and comprehensive
title (without authors of taxa unless necessary); ii) name(-s) and surname(-s)
of the author(-s); iii) address of the author(-s) (in Czech authors with the
zip-code, in foreign authors in a relevant form); presentation of the e-mail
address is recommended.
A b s t r a c t. In contrast to the formerly used, more
extensive “Summary” the “Abstract” summarizes essential results of the work –
its extent should not exceed 20 lines of the manuscript. It shall always
be written in English. In the case of a work written in German, a German
abstract can also be added. In this case, the work will have two abstracts —
the first one in English and the second one in German. Include all the
taxonomic actions implemented in the work. Names of taxa at generic and
specific levels are included with their authors and years of description.
K e y w o r d s. Choose several single-word terms
characterizing the work. The words may be identical with those occurring in the
title.
Example: Taxonomy, Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, Cerambyx, description, new
species, key, Palearctic region.
S t r u c t u r e o f t h e
t e x t i t s e l f (in more extensive works
only). Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgement
(without academic degrees) and References. If these parts have their subtitles,
write them on separate lines. In descriptions of new taxa, the type locality
and differential diagnosis shall be included.
G r a p h i c m a t e r i a l s and colour
reproductions must be numbered (1, 2, 3,…, xx), not designated by letters
(A, B, C,…, Z).
Q u o t a t i o n o f l i t e r a t
u r e. Quote works from the literature in the text with specifying
the author's name and year of publishing the work – e.g. Novák (1994) or (Kouba
1965; Novák & Kouba 1986); Novák et al. 1990 (in the case of more than two
authors)). Complete quotation shall be provided in References.
A b b r e v i a t i o n s o f i n
s t i t u t i o n s. When mentioning abbreviations of
institutions and private collections (codens) use principally official
abbreviations in accordance with the work by Arnett et al (1993) or with a
modified internet version of the work: The insect and spider collections of the
world: website (http://hbs.bishopmuseum.org/…ns-inst.html.).
R e f e r e n c e s. The quotation should be arranged in
alphabetical order of the names of authors, chronologically in the case of the
presence of several works of the same author; if an author published several
works in a year, which are quoted in the manuscript, use letters after the year
(e.g. 1989a, 1989b), which must correspond to those employed in the text. All
the authors quoted in the text and complete titles of works should be
presented. Full names of periodicals should be used with initial capital
letters of all the words except conjunctions and prepositions. The issue (not
the volume) shall be specified in parentheses after the number of the volume in
the case of journals having each issue with independent pagination (see the
example presented here: Longberg E. & Gustavson C. 1937). For titles of
works that were not published in common world languages (English, French,
German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese), or of those published in languages using
other than Roman characters (Russian, Bulgarian, etc.) it is necessary to take
the English equivalent of the title from the Abstract or Summary of the work or
to translate the original title into English, to put it into brackets (see the
example presented here: Nikolaev G. V. 1987), and to provide a note at the end,
e. g. (in Czech, English abstr.) (see the example Vláčil V. 1995). References
concerning books must comprise the publisher, city of publishing and number of
pages.

G r a p h i c m a t e r i a l s (drawings,
graphs, maps) should be supplied in two copies (original + one Xerox copy),
preferably twice as large as the intended final size (the size of printed plate
taking the whole page is 13×18 cm with three lines for the legend). Do not
use line-shading with a pencil. Figures should be arranged in plates in
intended shapes (full-page, half-page, etc.). Figures with differences in their
scales, adjusted by a software and arranged in combined photographic plates
(mostly including photos of microscopic slides) should have a scale bar each in
mm. Tables (in format “doc” or “rtf”) and legends of figures should be submitted
on separate sheets in as simple form as possible. If you are sending the whole
contribution including plates, illustrations and photographs on a CD, use the
resolution of at least 300 DPI for colour and black and white photos and
600 DPI for drawings (both in the format “tif”). For printing we need
clear “jpg” or “tif” files without figure-numbers and/or texts; the editor will
compose them in the graphic style of the journal according to the
author's sample pages.
C o l o u r r e p r o d u c t i o n s.
Slides 6×6 cm, small-sized slides or digital photos in the format “tif”,
with a resolution of at least 300 dpi are suitable. We can also provide
good results by the reproduction of colour photos and digital photos in the
format “jpg”. Preliminary consultation of possibilities of colour reproductions
is preferred.
T e c h n i c a l i n s t r u c t i o n
s. Type the text principally by using standard letters in the style Normal (use
neither CAPITAL letters, bold types nor underlined words) — the final graphic
arrangement will be provided by editors.
In the first use of a genus group or species group taxon in the text, it
is necessary to include the whole name of the author and the year of the
description (regardless of the fact whether the name of the taxon has already
been used in the abstract).
The short hyphen (-) should only be used for the specification of ranges
(3–5 mm, pp. 6–9, 3.-9.vi.2006, Figs. 1–5, etc.); the long
hyphen ( — ) [Ctrl + -] should be used in other cases.
A gap should be provided throughout the text after each point (except
the decimal point in English), coma, colon or semicolon (except abbreviations of
the type “e.g., a.s.l., U.S.A.”, etc.).
Gaps should never be used before any point, coma, colon or semicolon.
Italics should only be used in the text for Latin names of the groups of
genus and species and for names of journals or monographs in References. In
References, italics shall not be used for Latin names of taxa.
Bold types shall only be used for numbers of volumes of journals (see the
“Examples of References” above).
All the lines (the headings inclusive) should be left-justified, without
indenting paragraphs.
Each paragraph (i.e. also heading or independent line) should only be
terminated by the key “Enter”. Do not otherwise use this key.
In the text, do not use fixed gaps (the function of entering fixed gaps
should be switched off), line ends made up by hand, hand-inserted ends of pages
and automatic division of words.
Use symbols m∗ and f∗ instead of symbols for the male and
female, respectively (or possibly m∗m∗ and f∗f∗,
respectively).
In English texts, use principally English quotes ( “xxx” ), and decimal
points (not comas); use points after the abbreviations Fig., Figs., pp., Mt.
and etc.
The manuscript should be delivered in two copies, each page printed on one
side of the size A4, including a diskette or CD in the format “doc” (Word) or
exceptionally in “rtf”.
Before printing, the author will receive the work for proofreading.
The contributions are not subject to author's fees. The author(-s)
will receive 50 reprints free of charge; additional reprints may be
purchased based on an arrangement with the publisher (Publishing House
Kabourek) at a reduced price. Originals and diskettes are sent back to the
authors together with the reprints.
A CD with selected sample articles is available to support beginning
authors.
The manuscripts should be forwarded to the following address:
